our story

My journey to earthscreen has been a long one, and it all started with biodegradable soap. In 1979, I attended summer camp on Moose Pond in Maine. We bathed in the pond, and our counselors, Hunter and Amory, insisted we use biodegradable soap. They explained how detergents in other soaps destroyed the pond’s ecosystem. It was the first time I really understood how my actions could change the balance of life on the planet, and it sparked my love for the environment.

I followed environmental news as I grew older, but little of it was good. It was clear that we were damaging our planet. Most of my friends shared both my deep concern for our planet’s health and my sense of hopelessness in the face of environmental destruction.

But I remained hopeful, and I did more research. And once again, my camp counselors, Hunter and Amory Lovins, taught me a profound lesson. Since my days of bathing in Moose Pond, Hunter and Amory founded the Rocky Mountain Institute and became world famous environmentalists. They co-authored a groundbreaking book, Natural Capitalism, with Paul Hawken, a leading environmentalist and entrepreneur. It was an eye-opening book, and it changed the way I thought about the future of our planet.

The conventional wisdom holds that the environment and economic growth are competing factors: you could have one or the other, but not both. In other words, we had to choose between more jobs or a better environment. This would be a fundamental problem for our future if it were true. But Hunter, Amory and Paul showed me a solution. They wrote: “The conventional wisdom is mistaken in seeing priorities in economic, environmental and social policy as competing. The best solutions are based not on tradeoff or ‘balance’ between these objectives but on design integration achieving all of them together.” And they gave plenty examples that this is true.

Natural Capitalism is an inspiring book, and it gave me a vision and a new mission. earthscreen was born.

At the heart of our company are a few simple ideas. We believe (i) that saving our environment can and should benefit you, (ii) that together we can grow conservation faster than environmental destruction and (iii) that our future depends on all of us creating a sustainable world.

In the face of real environmental problems, I started earthscreen to connect you to the benefits of saving the world.

I hope you will join us on our journey.
