84,000 tons of Alkaline batteries end up in U.S. landfills every year. They take a very long time to degrade, unless crushed, and when they are crushed or degraded heavy metals like mercury leak out into soil and water. Batteries comprise 20% of the household hazardous waste in the U.S.

Enter the rechargeable battery. Though they still contain hazardous materials using them can reduce the waste by 300 to 1000 times (the number of times you can recharge a battery).  Actually using rechargeable batteries requires that they be convenient and easy to use. This is where the USBCell comes in.  When you flip the top of the USBCell AA rechargeable battery you'll find a USB connector that plugs right into a desktop or laptop computer. Because they are easy to use, they will be used more regularly, increasing overall sustainability and reducing waste in landfills.
